Term life insurance was the first form of life insurance and is pure insurance protection because it builds no cash value. This is in contrast to permanent life insurance such as whole life, universal life, and variable universal life. While basic term insurance doesn't typically work as an investment (there are some types that do) the trade-off is that it is cheap and will afford your family, employees or partners protection if death should occur. Like the name states, the insurance is set for a term, typical term insurance periods are 10, 15, 20, and 30 years. Once the term expires so does the life insurance protection.
